Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant
Tucked away on Dean Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant offers a little slice of Spain in the heart of the city. It’s one of those places where you step inside and immediately feel like you’ve stumbled upon a well-kept secret - warm ambiance, friendly faces, and a menu that reads like a love letter to Iberian cuisine.
The vibe here? Intimate, yet energetic. It’s got that rustic charm you’d expect from a Spanish bodega, but with the polish of a modern wine bar. Whether you're here for a solo brunch, a slow lunch, or an indulgent dinner with friends, Kaltur knows how to make your time worthwhile. It's a local favorite, especially for those who love long conversations over small plates and even longer wine lists.
What really makes Kaltur stand out is the authenticity. This isn’t tapas for the Instagram crowd - it’s tapas that pay tribute to tradition. Start with the Garlic Prawns, sizzling hot and infused with smoky paprika. They’re juicy, garlicky, and frankly, addictive. If you like your seafood on the bolder side, the Octopus dish is beautifully tender and packed with flavor, often served atop seasoned potatoes that soak up every drop of the sauce.
Charcuterie lovers will appreciate the Cheese Board and Spanish cured meats, which are clearly curated with care. Think Manchego, jamón, chorizo - the classics - paired with olives, pickled peppers, and house bread that’s just begging to be dipped in olive oil. And speaking of olive oil, Kaltur uses premium Spanish varieties that elevate even the simplest of dishes.
For something heartier, don’t skip the Slow Roasted Pork Belly - rich, perfectly caramelized, and paired with sides that balance the fat with acid and crunch. The Braised Short Ribs are another winner, especially if you're after comfort food with a Mediterranean twist. Vegetarians aren’t left behind either; dishes like Tempura Aubergine with Cane Syrup deliver sweet and savory in one bite, and yes, they’re just as satisfying as their meat-based counterparts.
If you're in for brunch or lunch, the Spanish Omelette is a solid pick - thick, warm, and just the right amount of dense. For lighter options, dishes like the Tuna Tartare or Fried Local Squid with Alioli offer freshness and crunch in equal measure.
And of course, this is a wine bar. The wine list is a celebration of Spanish regions - from bold Riojas to crisp Albariños. The staff are more than happy to guide you through pairings if you’re unsure where to start. There’s also a nice selection of Spanish beers, cocktails, coffee, and spirits if you’re in the mood for something different.
Beyond the food and drink, Kaltur keeps things relaxed and unpretentious. There’s seating for every occasion, from bar-side sipping to cozy corners perfect for date night. It's got on-site services, full dine-in availability, and stays open late enough for those who enjoy an unhurried evening. Whether you’re looking for a solid spot for lunch or somewhere to sip a glass of red with dessert (might we suggest the Almond Tart?), Kaltur delivers without the fuss.
There’s something truly special about how Kaltur captures the soul of Spain without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. Maybe it’s the quality ingredients, maybe it’s the laid-back hospitality, or maybe it’s just the way the Toast with Tomato tastes better when paired with a glass of Spanish red. Either way, this isn’t just a wine bar - it’s a place you’ll want to return to, again and again.

Our second visit for my partner’s 40th, with our 2 children in tow. Luisa made us feel so welcome, the food was delicious as always and they even brought out surprise cake and sang happy birthday!
Smol plate tapas & extensive Spanish wine list. Friendly ppl & chefs that cares about making good food. Good vibes!
Not the best tapas restaurant in Newcastle in my opinion. Expensive food with fragrant flavours but it was disappointing. It wasn’t anything special and I don’t think it’s worth the prices. They put a service charge on that they won’t take off, think it was about 10% per head. It was recommended that we got two plates each but I think three would have been better. I felt like I ate just enough but felt as though I’d be hungry later on. A knife was accidentally dropped on me by the waiter too …I didn’t feel like it was massively authentic tapas food and would rather go elsewhere next time.
OMG just moved to Newcastle and to find this gem has been amazing . The welcome , the menu and have to say the food is authentic, fresh and WOW The nod to the region using North Shields squid is just fantastic but done on the grill whoop . Louisa is a perfect host , full of smiles , great information on the food ,Just perfect . if you have a chance drop in for drinks and food you will not be disappointed , I promise . Made my day , well done team Kaltur and Louisa especially .
After a lunch here my partner and I agreed this was the best tapas we'd had outside Spain. Something for everyone from veggies to seafood aficionados, and all of the wines we tried were of high quality. Service was attentive but unhurried. I'm knocking off 1 star for lack of atmosphere but give the place a break as this was a Monday lunchtime! Looking forward to our return visit already. Highly recommended.
